POLITICO launches in Europe tomorrow
POLITICO.eu Debuts Tuesday, April 21, 2015 / Print Edition to Follow Thursday / Policy Coverage Plans Unveiled
POLITICO and Axel Springer, the owners of the POLITICO joint venture in Europe, announced the launch of the new publication, POLITICO.eu, which will debut early tomorrow morning, April 21, 2015, Central European Summer Time. POLITICO is building the largest newsroom in Brussels, in addition to bureaus in Berlin, London and Paris. POLITICO emerges on the European media scene with nearly 40 journalists representing 20 nationalities from four continents speaking 14 languages. Full-time correspondents in Moscow and Frankfurt will follow later this year.
“With reporting assets not just in Brussels but in key capitals across the Continent, we will cover the machinations and maneuvers, the personalities the culture and the interplay between European politics and policy with more immediacy and style than anyone has done it before,” said John Harris, POLITICO’s co-founder and editor-in-chief. “The way to cover these stories is not from Brussels alone, or from the perspective of any one nation, but between understanding the leaders and the interplay of interests between different capitals,” added Executive Editor Matthew Kaminski.
“Axel Springer is proud to be a partner in bringing the POLITICO brand to the European market. Together, we have recruited some of the most talented political journalists in order to offer a new and in-depth coverage of European politics,” said Ralph Büchi, President of Axel Springer International.
POLITICO will also launch tomorrow, on 21 April 2015, its first in a series of early morning newsletters designed to set the agenda in Brussels and beyond. POLITICO Brussels Playbook, modeled off Chief White House Correspondent Mike Allen’s must-read tipsheet in Washington, will be sent at 7:00 am CEST to more than 25,000 readers. The European tipsheet will be written by Ryan Heath, senior EU correspondent and associate editor at POLITICO. Readers can sign up for Brussels Playbook at www.politico.eu.
In the coming weeks, POLITICO will unveil policy newsletters and coverage on health care, technology and energy. These daily offerings will be free for a trial period. By summer, premium subscription content in each coverage area will offer professionals real-time intelligence on the regulatory and policy debates in Europe. With teams of three to six journalists each, POLITICO’s health care, technology and energy teams will be unmatched in the European market.
“Political and policy professionals with a stake in Europe want someone to cut through the noise, tell them what really matters and tell them first,” said POLITICO Managing Director Shéhérazade Semsar-de Boisséson
“POLITICO has a proven track record for doing just that—online, on phone screens, in print and through news-making events — and our European products will build on it.”
A weekly print edition of POLITICO will be unveiled Thursday, April 23, 2015, with approximately 30,000 copies distributed in Brussels as well as to key capitals and cities, including Paris, London, Berlin and Frankfurt.
Also Thursday, POLITICO will host a launch event in Brussels featuring some of Europe’s most influential politicos. Speakers include: Donald Tusk, President of the European Council; Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament; Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO; Andrus Ansip, European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Single Market; Carl Bildt, Former Prime Minister and Former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden; Frédéric Mazzella, Founder and CEO of Blablacar; Marietje Schaake, Member of the European Parliament; Martin Selmayr, Head of Cabinet of the President of the European Commission; Guy Verhofstadt, Member of the European Parliament, Leader of the ALDE Group and former Prime Minister of Belgium; and Margrethe Vestager, European Commissioner for Competition.
The event, “European Divides: A Make or Break Year for the Union,” is hosted by the POLITICO European leadership team and presented by EURid and Google. It begins at 5:00pm CEST and will be covered by international and national media. Video of the event will be posted on POLITICO.eu, leading to more POLITICO newsmaking and policy events in the coming weeks.
